Girard Winery featured at Reno Peppermill Hotel WineMaker Dinner
(PRWEB) September 11, 2004
Recently selected as ÂÂArtisan Winery of the YearÂÂ by Wine & Spirits Magazine, Girard Winery is located in the heart of CaliforniaÂÂs Napa Valley wine country. According to GirardÂÂs winemaker, Marco DiGiulio, ÂÂAt Girard, [he works] with the kind of high quality grapes that most winemakers can only dream of. The same quality extends to what goes in [their] bottles.” GirardÂÂs award-winning wines reflect the rich flavor of Napa ValleyÂÂs best grapes.
Girard Winery features classic and richly flavorful wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Napa Valley Red, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah. In the STARWINE Competition in March 2004, GirardÂÂs Sauvignon Blanc was the only Sauvignon Blanc from the U.S. selected by 63 of the worldÂÂs top sommeliers and wine tasters from 22 countries for a gold medal. According to the ConnoisseurÂÂs Guide to California Wine, GirardÂÂs Chardonnay ÂÂis at once full, rounded and pleasantly crisp with a long and satisfying finish, and it gets the nod for value too.ÂÂ In addition, GirardÂÂs 2001 Zinfandel was rated ÂÂOne of the Best 10 Zinfandels of the YearÂÂ from Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits Magazine.
Pat Roney, owner of Girard, will host the dinner. White Orchid Chef de Cuisine Roger Morris created the wine dinner entrées to complement the Girard wines. The wine dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception, Amusement of the Chef, featuring Girard Sauvignon Blanc, 2002.
Dinner starts with mélange of seafood salad in gazpacho consommé (Girard Chardonnay, 2002). This is followed with thinly sliced Ahi tuna with fennel, Roma tomatoes, Mediterranean olives and goat cheese drizzled with basil vinaigrette (Girard Napa Valley Red, 2000). This is followed by Sicilian lemon sorbet with champagne-mint jus. The next course is petite filet mignon of beef with lobster potato puree, shiitake mushrooms and baby spinach cream (Girard Cabernet Franc, 2001).
The main course is coriander crusted tournedos of lamb with vegetable couscous and fennel-lamb jus (Girard Petite Syrah, 2002). This will be served with baby greens and garden vegetable salad with summer herb vinaigrette (Calistoga Sparkling Water).
The dessert course is a Godiva chocolate truffle torte with chocolate fudge sorbet and autumn berry coulis (Girard Zinfandel, 2002). To finish off the meal, guests may enjoy petite fours and freshly brewed coffee.
The dinner is per guest plus tax and gratuity. To make reservations or for more information, please call (775) 689-7300.

Cathedral Ridge Winery Voted Oregon Winery of the Year
Hood River, OR (PRWEB) October 24, 2007
Cathedral Ridge Winery, voted Oregon Winery of the Year by Wine Press Northwest, has been around for years. Yet, for most wine lovers – and its owner – it might as well be brand new.
Years ago, Wine Press Northwest held a judging of about 50 Northwest Rieslings. The one that rose to the top – Flerchinger Vineyards in Hood River, Ore. – was completely unexpected. The next year, we judged about 75 Northwest Pinot Gris, and the still-obscure Flerchinger came out No. 1 again.
The man behind that winery was Don Flerchinger. When he decided to retire in 2003 after 18 years, Flerchinger sold the operation to Robb Bell. Bell had plans: He changed the name to Cathedral Ridge Winery, and he wanted to put a focus on reds. Yet Bell needed to walk a fine line because he respected what Flerchinger had built, and he didn’t want to alienate his customer base.
Looking back, Bell realizes it might have been simpler to start a new winery from scratch, but he came out through a difficult period with strong following and several superb wines. “It was difficult,” Bell said. “But Don still lives next door, and he has been a significant asset and a good friend.” As an homage to the winery’s roots, Bell still uses the Flerchinger label on one wine, an off-dry white called Halbtrocken.
When Bell took over, he knew he needed help with the winemaking, so he called upon Michael Sebastiani in Sonoma, Calif., whose family has been making wine in Northern California for more than a century.
Sebastiani, who travels to the Columbia Gorge monthly to taste through barrels and work on blends, has had an almost immediate impact on the wines. The most stark evidence came last year, when the 2004 Syrah earned an “Outstanding” rating and was No. 6 out of 129 Syrahs judged by Wine Press Northwest. Proving this was no fluke, that same Syrah earned a unanimous Double Platinum in our seventh annual year-end Platinum Judging and was the No. 5 wine overall out of 247 gold metal winners judged.
Bell is quick to heap praise on the grapes and those who grow them. “We’re pinching ourselves here because we have everything from Zin to Gewurztraminer. In a 35-40 mile zone, we have all of these varieties growing,” he said. “You have to be lazy to make bad wines here.”
Bell works closely with Lonnie Wright, owner of The Pines Vineyard in The Dalles, Ore., which is famous for its century-old Zinfandel vines. “We’re fortunate to work with some great guys who have vast knowledge” of viticulture in the Gorge, Bell said. “There are mature 25- to 30-acre patches in amazing microclimates.”
Bell also believes alcohols are too high in many wines, so he’s doing his best to keep them under control by picking the grapes ever-so-slightly less ripe.
Cathedral Ridge’s focus on the red side is in Bordeaux and Rhone varieties, with a bit of Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. Bell plans to stay the course, though he is interested in looking at some classic Italian varieties, including Nebbiolo.
On the white side, the workhorses continue to be the Alsatian-style whites that gained Flerchinger its fame, including Riesling and Pinot Gris. He also has a couple of Chardonnays and an off-dry rose.
As Bell gazes up and down the Gorge – with forests to the west and desert to the east – he is amazed at the explosion of wineries. Within a 30-minute drive of Hood River, there are at least 22 wineries, and business is picking up. He’s open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and on many summer days, about 250 customers will walk through his door, thanks to the plethora of wineries, good restaurants, natural beauty and absence of traffic in the Gorge. “People are starting to figure out that they can get here from downtown Portland faster than they can get to McMinnville,” Bell said.
